In the Cricket World Cup 2023, Australia has won the title
for the sixth time after defeating India.
In reply to India's score of 240, Australia achieved the
desired target in 43 overs with the loss of just three wickets.
India though came into the tournament unbeaten having won
their previous 9 matches and the number one position in the points table made
them the ideal team for the finals.
India started defending their target aggressively and sent
the Aussie openers back to the pavilion without giving them a chance to
recover.
But the fourth-wicket partnership of Travis Head and Marence
Lebkuchen not only supported the team but also fell like dew on India's hopes.
In a seemingly unbeaten partnership, he led his team to
victory but was caught out on the head boundary while trying to play a big shot
in the closing moments of the match. He scored 137 runs.
Glenn Maxwell, who followed him, added the decisive two runs
to seal the win for the team.
When the team scored 200 runs, the Indian fans started
leaving the ground in frustration.
After the winning short, the players of the Australian team gather on the ground and celebrate in a beautiful way. |
Earlier, India scored 240 runs by Rohit Sharma's team
batting first on the invitation of Australian captain Pat Cummins.
Australia's bowlers showed impressive performance in the
match. India's top scorer was KL Rahul who scored 66 runs. Kohli scored a fine
half-century after which Cummins dismissed him.
Australia's Starc took three wickets for 55 runs while
Cummins took two wickets for 34 runs. A brilliant catch by Head ended the
innings of Rohit Sharma who scored 47 runs off 31 balls.
Australia was looking to win their sixth World Cup title
against India, winners in 1983 and 2011.

DETAILS
Travis Head's brilliant innings led Australia to a World Cup victory against overwhelming hot favorites India in Ahmedabad on Sunday night.
Head scored 137 off 120 balls with 15 fours and four sixes, his second century of the tournament, as Australia dominated the opening moments with brilliant cricket to win by six wickets with 42 balls to spare. Australia finished with 4-241 after dismissing India for 240 with a brilliant display of bowling and fielding.
Head was well supported by anchorman Marnes Leboschgen (58 not out from 110 balls), an anticlimax when Head was caught on the midwicket boundary with just two runs needed. Glenn Maxwell played Mohammad Siraj's next delivery short through square leg for two runs and Australia suddenly became World Cup champions for the sixth time.
Australia's heroics began before the tournament when the Aussies decided to sit out the first half of their campaign with a broken wrist. He has reaped rewards in abundance, picking up three player-of-the-match awards in six matches, including the semi-final against South Africa in Kolkata last Thursday, thanks to his batting and bowling.
The award on Sunday was for his fielding as well as his batting when he took a running, diving catch to dismiss India captain Rohit Sharma for 47 off just 31 balls. Head ended the tournament with 329 runs at an average of 55 and an impressive strike rate of 128.
Captain Pat Cummins proved a brave and decisive leader, driving the game after Australia lost their first two matches and were threatened with an early exit. They won their next nine straight.
Beating previously unbeaten India in such comprehensive fashion in conditions tailor-made for the home team was one of the greatest achievements in 146 years of international cricket.
Cummins' heroics continued on Sunday with his decision to win the toss and bowl against him, having dominated the batting earlier in the tournament. It looked even braver when Indian skipper Rohit Sharma led his team to their usual start.
Cummins stood out despite what was considered his best bowling performance of the tournament, taking two crucial wickets with 2-34 from his 10 overs.
Shubman Gill (4) was caught early by Adam Zampa, sweeping down the leg-side, but Virat Kohli's 47 off just 31 balls rocked Rohit's roll. The second of his three sixes was a daring drive by Mitchell Starc at mid-off.
Continuing to play up to his promise, Rohit finished the tournament as the second highest run-scorer with 597 at an average of 54 and a particularly impressive strike rate of 126.
But with Rohit so brilliantly caught by Head and the dangerous Shreyas Iyer caught for just four behind the delightful Cummins, India were suddenly at 3-81. The wave of noise created by over 100,000 fans in a sea of blue India shirts ended abruptly.
